Xiaomi's Redmi Independent; 48MP camera smartphone to debut on January 10
Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi is releasing a new smartphone Redmi Pro 2 with a 48-megapixel camera in January 2019. The Redmi smartphone bearing a 48 MP camera could be officially unveiled on the 10th of January 2019 in China. The teaser has a new Redmi logo, which will be unveiled along with the launch of the first Redmi smartphone with a 48 MP camera. As of now, there is no official confirmation about the specifications of the upcoming Redmi smartphones.
However, the upcoming Redmi 7 series has also leaked a couple of times in the past few weeks and has also appeared on certification cites. The Redmi 7 was recently certified by TENAA and it means, the device is set for launch in China. Xiaomi was expected to launch the Redmi 7 towards the end of 2018 but the company launched Mi Play instead with 10GB free monthly data for a year. However, there have been multiple leaks related to Xiaomi, which makes it almost impossible to confirm what the company has in store for customers.
Xiaomi Redmi 7 or Redmi Pro 2 can be unveiled today
Xiaomi Redmi Pro 2
Xiaomi Redmi Pro 2 will be the company’s take on smartphones with 48-megapixel AI rear cameras as Xiaomi confirmed in December that it will soon be launching a new smartphone with the Sony IMX 586 48-megapixel sensor early next year. While the Xiaomi Redmi Pro 2 is also expected to come with an in-display camera or a punch-hole display, it will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 processor backed by up to 6GB of RAM.
Xiaomi’s Redmi is now a sub-brand, 48MP smartphone teased for launch
Huawei kicked off the trend of sub-brands with Honor back in 2013, and 2018 saw other players jump on the trend as well. Now, Xiaomi has announced that it’s turning its Redmi range into a sub-brand.
The company announced on its official website through an image, confirming that we will learn more at the press conference on January 10 (local time at 2 pm).

A closer look at the image also reveals the number 4,800 in the shadows. Chinese companies (such as TENAA) occasionally use this convention for megapixels, with 1,200 referring to 12MP and 500 referring to 5MP. So it looks like the first device under the Redmi sub-brand will pack a 48MP camera. It could also potentially refer to battery size, but Xiaomi traditionally sticks to a 4,000mAh battery for its larger Redmi phones.
