Samsung Galaxy M10 First Impressions: Samsung takes it up a notch with its new budget phone

Samsung just brought fresh competition in the budget smartphone segment with its Galaxy M series starting at Rs 7,990. Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 smartphones are the first phones in the series with Galaxy M30 expected to launch in February.
Now, with the Samsung Galaxy M10, the South Korean company is bringing its new Infinity V display featuring a waterdrop notch design, reliable hardware under the hood and most importantly an affordable price tag. But is it too little and too late for Samsung? We try to find out that answer.
The most striking thing in the Galaxy M series for Samsung will be its design. Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 both look identical with the waterdrop notch which Samsung calls “Infinity V” display. The smartphone has a slim build with curved edges like the mid-range Galaxy A series. Galaxy M10 has a big 6.22-inch screen but the smartphone has a compact form factor thanks to its edge-to-edge display.

Samsung Galaxy M10 First Impressions: Display and design

This is the first time when we have seen the new Infinity V display notch design on a Samsung smartphone.
Starting with the design, the Samsung Galaxy M10 has a polycarbonate plastic body that has a premium look with plain glass finish. Front is Waterdrop Knopch, which gives a very spectacular look in this price range. The notch houses front-facing camera and just above it is the earpiece. The chin area is kept ideal due to on-screen navigation controls.

The fact that it is the trendy waterdrop display design that makes the Samsung Galaxy M10 even more irresistible. The moment you pick up the device, the first thing you will notice is its lightweight. This is due to the plastic build of the Samsung Galaxy M10 which is a hit or miss concept since we have gotten accustomed to metallic panels in this price segment. The device does feel sturdy, but you won’t even think of testing it with a drop, all because of its light-weight design and the fear of giving it a dent.

There are dual cameras with LED flash in the rear of the device. Just beneath it, one will find the Samsung branding. The top of the front features waterdrop notch featuring the front camera. At the bottom, we have a micro USB port, a secondary microphone, 3.5mm headphone jack to cancel the noise. Behind the phone is the speaker grill. On the right side, we have the power of / off button and volume control while on the left there is a 3-slot SIM tray, which allows you to use two sim at the same time as well as a micro-SD card.

There is the 6.2-inch HD+ Infinity-V display with the waterdrop notch housing the front camera, which seems refreshing and the curved design makes it the perfect panel for watching videos. However, the bottom chin in substantially thick but it is acceptable considering the price tag of the Samsung Galaxy M10. In our first impressions, we would like to say that the display panel offers a wide real-estate for multimedia consumption while the brightness levels and viewing angles also seemed to be above average. That said, we will be testing the display in different scenarios for our detailed Samsung Galaxy M10 review.

Samsung Galaxy M10 First Impressions: Camera

For optics, Samsung Galaxy M10 features a dual-camera setup at the back, which comes with a combination of a 13-megapixel main module (f/1.9, 1.12µm) and a 5-megapixel depth sensor.  In addition to this, it houses a 5MP selfie camera in its notch. There is a lot that you can do with the device’s cameras. To begin with, it is extremely simple to switch between the primary and the ultra-wide angle lens, which is something that we have seen in other Samsung smartphones but we still like it.
During our brief testing period, we found out that the device taking decent photos in proper lighting conditions but we are still to test the camera capabilities in different lighting conditions. Self-test cameras also did a good job in our testing times. We will use Samsung Galaxy M10 well in the next few days and will give you the camera quality information in a detailed full review. Tune in with us for a detailed review later.

Samsung Galaxy M10 First Impressions: Hardware, software, and battery

The Galaxy M10 is powered by Samsung’s octa-core Exynos 7870 processor clocked at 1.59 GHz coupled with ARM Mali T830 GPU. It further includes 2GB / 3GB RAM with 16GB / 32GB storage versions which support expandable storage via a dedicated microSD card slot. While the Samsung Galaxy M10 runs Android 8.1.0 Oreo with Samsung’s skin on top, it also supports dual SIM connectivity.

On the software front, the Galaxy M10 runs on Android 8.1 Oreo, which is based on the company’s Experience 9.5 UI running on top of it. All the ordinary apps like Facebook, WhatsApp, Chrome, Gmail, YouTube were opened quite easily, there was no sign of stoutors in the device. There is a lot in the user interface, and we will discuss it in a detailed review.

The battery seemed enough for a full day of moderate usage, but we are yet to test the Samsung Galaxy M10 with heavy-graphics games and online video streaming. However, we do expect the 3400mAh battery to last more than our expectations even though the Infinity-V display might be eating a lot of juice in regards to the battery’s screen time.
